Kamakura-Bori involves carving patterns onto pieces of wood cut from the cinnamomum cassia tree, and then coating them with lacquer.
The number of people practicing Kamakura-Bori is on the increase, regardless of age and gender. This craft enables a wide range of articles to be produced, from trays, dishes, bowls, tea cup saucers and small boxes through to accessories.
The articles produced are highly sophisticated items representative of Japan’s traditional handcrafts, of which we are justly proud. Everybody is a beginner when they first start. Once you become familiar with handling the chisels, it provides a way of maintaining health from the fingertips. All of us at Kamakura-Bori Azabu Carving Class look forward to hearing from you.
